What Are Shin Splints?


Shin splints, medically known as medial tibial stress syndrome, are a common overuse injury that causes pain along the inside edge of the shinbone (tibia). The condition develops when repeated stress is placed on the muscles, tendons, and bone tissue surrounding the shin, leading to irritation and inflammation.


Shin splints most commonly affect runners, walkers, hikers, dancers, military personnel, and athletes who participate in sports involving frequent running or jumping. They often occur when activity levels increase too quickly or when the lower legs are subjected to repetitive impact without adequate recovery.
