Selective Functional Movement Assessment in Roseville, CA
Understand how you move. Build a more personalized care plan.
At Johnson Ranch Chiropractic, Dr. Charles Boley II, DC, uses Selective Functional Movement Assessment (SFMA) to evaluate movement limitations in patients experiencing musculoskeletal pain.
The assessment helps guide recommendations based on your movement, symptoms, and goals.
What is Selective Functional Movement Assessment (SFMA)?
Selective Functional Movement Assessment is a structured clinical assessment that examines how different areas of your body move together.
Rather than looking only at the area that hurts, Dr. Boley evaluates movement patterns that may reveal other limitations relevant to your symptoms.
SFMA helps distinguish between:
-
Mobility limitations: Difficulty achieving a range of motion.
-
Stability and movement-control limitations: Difficulty controlling a movement or position.
These findings are considered alongside your health history and examination to help guide care. SFMA does not replace a complete clinical evaluation or identify every possible cause of pain.
Why Look Beyond the Area That Hurts?
Everyday activities require several joints and muscle groups to work together. An assessment of these combined movements can provide information that looking at one area alone may miss.
For example, when evaluating discomfort during an overhead reach, Dr. Boley may examine shoulder movement alongside movement through the neck and upper back.
The purpose is to identify relevant limitations, prioritize what needs attention, and establish a starting point for reassessment.
Who May Benefit from an SFMA Evaluation?
Dr. Boley may consider SFMA when evaluating:
-
Pain during bending, reaching, twisting, or squatting.
-
Recurring musculoskeletal discomfort with daily activities.
-
Movement limitations following an injury.
-
Symptoms that interfere with exercise or recreational sports.
-
Difficulty returning comfortably to an activity.
You do not need to be an athlete. The evaluation can be relevant to everyday goals, such as reaching overhead, lifting groceries, or moving more comfortably at work.
Your history and symptoms determine whether SFMA is appropriate or whether another evaluation should come first.
What to Expect at Your Appointment
1. Discuss Your Symptoms & Goals
Dr. Boley reviews your concerns, relevant injury history, and the activities that are uncomfortable or difficult.
2. Assess Your Movement
You’ll be guided through movements such as bending, rotating, reaching, balancing on one leg, and squatting, as appropriate.
3. Explore Relevant Limitations
Additional movement tests may help clarify whether a limitation involves mobility, movement control, or a combination of factors. Tell Dr. Boley whenever a movement causes discomfort.
4. Review Your Findings
Dr. Boley explains what the assessment suggests and discusses appropriate next steps. These may include exercise recommendations, hands-on care, or further evaluation.
