What Is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is a condition that occurs when the median nerve becomes compressed as it passes through a narrow passageway in the wrist called the carpal tunnel. This nerve is responsible for providing sensation to the thumb, index finger, middle finger, and part of the ring finger while also controlling several muscles in the hand.
When pressure builds within the carpal tunnel, the median nerve can become irritated, leading to pain, numbness, tingling, and weakness in the hand and wrist. Symptoms often begin gradually and may become more noticeable during repetitive activities or while sleeping.
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is one of the most common nerve compression conditions and can affect people of all ages. It is especially common among individuals whose jobs or hobbies involve repetitive hand and wrist movements.
Since numbness and hand pain can have several different causes, Dr. Charles Boley performs a comprehensive evaluation to determine whether symptoms are truly originating from the carpal tunnel or another source such as the neck, shoulder, or surrounding soft tissues.
Common Symptoms
Patients with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome often experience:
Numbness or tingling in the thumb, index, middle, or ring fingers.
Pain in the wrist or palm.
Hand weakness.
Difficulty gripping objects.
Frequently dropping items.
Burning or aching sensations in the hand.
Symptoms that worsen at night. Tingling that radiates into the forearm. Difficulty performing fine motor tasks such as buttoning clothes or writing.
Symptoms often develop gradually and may become more frequent over time.
What Causes Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?
Several factors may contribute to Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, including:
Repetitive hand and wrist movements.
Prolonged computer or keyboard use.
Repetitive gripping.
Assembly line or factory work.
Construction or manual labor.
Pregnancy.
Diabetes.
Arthritis.
Wrist injuries.
Inflammation surrounding the wrist.
Poor wrist positioning during repetitive activities.
Many patients have more than one contributing factor, making an individualized treatment plan especially important.
How StemWave Therapy May Help
StemWave Therapy is a non-invasive treatment that uses acoustic wave technology to stimulate the body's natural healing response. Depending on the individual's condition and overall health, this therapy may help improve circulation, support tissue healing, reduce inflammation, and relieve pain associated with certain musculoskeletal conditions.
For patients experiencing symptoms related to Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, StemWave may be incorporated into a comprehensive treatment plan designed to improve function, reduce discomfort, and support recovery. Depending on the findings during your evaluation, treatment recommendations may also include chiropractic care, rehabilitation exercises, ergonomic recommendations, or other conservative therapies.
Because symptoms similar to Carpal Tunnel Syndrome can also originate from the neck, shoulder, or surrounding nerves, Dr. Charles Boley performs a thorough evaluation to determine the true source of your symptoms before recommending treatment.
